Duke Fuqua Addition

dURHAM, nORTH cAROLINA
The addition to Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business breathes new energy into the existing campus buildings, thoughtfully designed to meet the evolving needs of the university community. Through several public engagement sessions, input from key stakeholders, students, and faculty helped shape the space, ensuring it aligns with the school's academic and social goals. The new addition serves as a vibrant hub, facilitating opportunities for collaboration, study, and hosting events, offering a dynamic intersection where people can meet and work together. Seamlessly integrated into the broader Fuqua campus, this project supports the business school's continued growth and its commitment to fostering an environment of innovation and connection.

Option One allows the event space to be put on display with vast expanses of glass that are framed and shaded by a large, covered porch. This porch folds down into a stair that makes a welcoming connection with the site and creates an uplifting and communal space for people as they enter the building. The rear of the addition sits the two-story projecting office tower; the location of Option Two allows it to have a minimal visual impact on the existing Fox Center and the new event space and porch.
Option Two strives to preserve the spacious and light-filled nature of the Fox Center and the existing views to the nearby forest. A glassy, double-height event space links the Fox Center, creating a seamless connection. The 5-story support and office tower are located farther from the Fox Center as to preserve the view to the forest. A generous outdoor porch extending from the event space assists in the dialogue between the building and the forest, while providing a vibrant breakout space to compliment the main event hall.
