Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Research

durham, north carolina
The Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Research (IAIER) at North Carolina Central University is envisioned as both a gateway to the university and a beacon of innovation for the region. As a center for artificial intelligence education, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration, the institute is designed to advance emerging technologies while fostering new modes of learning, discovery, and engagement.

Open 24 hours a day, the building serves as a bridge between campus and community, welcoming students, faculty, researchers, and visitors into an environment that supports continuous exploration and creative exchange. The architectural vision draws inspiration from the front porches that characterize the surrounding neighborhood; spaces that encourage connection, conversation, and belonging. This familiar civic gesture is reinterpreted at an institutional scale through a generous covered canopy that extends the building into the landscape, blurring the boundary between indoors and outdoors. The canopy creates a flexible gathering space for study, events, collaboration, and informal interaction throughout the day and night.

By combining technological innovation with a strong sense of place, IAIER establishes a welcoming and forward-looking destination that reflects NCCU’s commitment to academic excellence, community engagement, and the future of artificial intelligence.
