147 UNDERPASS

This project highlights the deep connection between Durham’s physical landscape and its history, values, and evolving identity. The NC-147 overpass at Blackwell Street serves as a symbolic gateway, reflecting the city’s industrial roots, transportation evolution, and ongoing downtown revitalization. Located near the American Tobacco Campus, the site has witnessed Durham’s transformation—from its tobacco and railroad past to the rise of the Durham Freeway, the Bulls Stadium, and the Performing Arts Center.

Capital Broadcasting Corporation’s initiative to reimagine this space is a visionary effort to strengthen connections between key destinations while fostering a more welcoming urban environment. As Durham continues to grow, the project presents a unique opportunity to blend historical significance with future potential. Through collaboration between CBC, the NC Department of Transportation, and the City of Durham, this initiative could serve as a model for future development.

Beyond infrastructure, the project is a catalyst for community engagement, reflecting a shared vision of an inclusive and dynamic city. By embracing its past while looking ahead, Durham can create a meaningful public space that enhances its urban fabric and resonates with residents and visitors alike.
