Located just five miles from downtown Columbus, the new
Marion-Franklin Branch fills a crucial void in a long-neglected community.
Isolated by historic railroads and highway development, this tightly knit
neighborhood thrives on inter-generational ties and deep community pride. The
design captures the community's vibrant spirit through a celebration of
transparency, seamlessly intertwining indoor and outdoor spaces across the
site. A sawtooth facade not only frames picturesque views of the nearby park
and community center but also captures the energy and movement of this active
street. Industrial-inspired materials blend with warm wood accents, evoking a
comforting atmosphere.

The design channels this communal pride, reaching out to welcome the community through carefully placed frames that create connections to the outdoors, adjacent community center, and nearby houses. A sawtooth facade along the west elevation angles library patron views to the northwest toward the nearby park and reflects movement along the active street. The building’s exterior materials and exposed interior structure reflect the industrial surroundings, while the interior features wood insertions for warmth and a sense of home. Purple, which symbolizes wisdom, independence, and creativity, is used as a unifying accent color. A central skylight illuminates the shared interior space and offsets Ohio’s traditionally gray skies.
