The new Engineering and Computer Science Complex includes classroom and laboratory spaces for the colleges of science, mathematics, and engineering technology. Environmentally sustainable design strategies have been implemented for this design, which earned USGBC LEED® Gold Certification. The project consolidated teaching, research, and office spaces that were scattered in many older buildings on campus. Several departments are now housed in the complex: mathematics, computer science, civil engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, and industrial technology and industrial technology education.
This highly efficient design is like a car engine whereby the aesthetics reflect function. In a car engine, valves, pistons, and crankshafts are organized into a compact area that is protected by a sleeve to reduce their wind resistance. Similarly, the Engineering building features a metal-wrapped sheathing that provides a finely textured, south-facing fenestration to face the heart of the campus. Sliding behind the metal façade is a double-loaded brick volume that cleanly houses classrooms, faculty offices and meeting spaces.
