Columbus Metropolitan Libraries - Marion Franklin Branch Library

2024 ALA/IIDA Library Interior Design Awards Winner - On the Boards

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Project Size: 10,300 SF

This new branch library provides a long overdue resource and gathering space for a neglected, predominantly African American community within five miles of downtown Columbus. Cut off from the rest of the city by railroad and highway infrastructure, the Marion-Franklin community has formed strong inter-generational bonds to support itself. Many residents have lived in the area for decades, and all share a deep sense of community pride.

The design channels this communal pride, reaching out to welcome the community through carefully placed frames that create connections to the outdoors, adjacent community center, and nearby houses. A sawtooth facade along the west elevation angles library patron views to the northwest toward the nearby park and reflects movement along the active street. The building’s exterior materials and exposed interior structure reflect the industrial surroundings, while the interior features wood insertions for warmth and a sense of home. Purple, which symbolizes wisdom, independence, and creativity, is used as a unifying accent color. A central skylight illuminates the shared interior space and offsets Ohio’s traditionally gray skies.
