M19H11 combines a 1288-student local middle school with a 200-student magnet high school within a single structure on a challengingly rich site. Though colocated under a common roof, both schools maintain distinct identities and separate circulation zones, while shared programs like the Media Center strategically unify the two schools in the middle. A vertical commons organizes the overall building around a series of double-height connected spaces. ‘Arms’ reach out into the landscape to link indoor and outdoor educational spaces and respond to the surrounding context.
